Winter Night in the City
Late winter night in Halle: a woman in a long coat hurries past snow-covered bicycle racks in front of a massive stone wall. Only the sparse glow of a single street light lifts the scene from darkness — footprints in fresh snow, arched windows of a Gründerzeit building, and a pedestrian crossing sign tell the story of quiet city life after midnight. Fun fact: at first glance, she appears to have four legs — she was actually walking in perfect sync with a second person whose steps fell in exact unison.
Tram at Night
A HAVAG tram bearing large-scale "Sachsen-Anhalt" advertising glides through the snowy winter night. Through the illuminated windows, passengers can be seen sheltering from the cold outside. Street lights and bare trees frame the scene on the edge of Halle's old town.
Don't worry, be curry
The "Don't worry, be curry" Currywurst stand on the corner of Universitätsring and Friedemann-Bach-Platz on a snowy January day. A customer stands beneath the snow-covered parasol while the empty outdoor seating awaits warmer days. Gründerzeit facades and a traffic light form the backdrop — everyday urban life in wintry Halle.
Evening Walk
A pedestrian with a backpack appears as a blurred silhouette in front of snow-covered Gründerzeit apartment buildings — the long exposure creates a ghostly motion blur that captures the hurried stride through the winter cold. Illuminated windows, parked cars beneath blankets of snow, and a second figure at the edge of the frame tell the story of quiet evening life in wintry Halle.
Winter Symmetry
Two park benches on the Peißnitz island, perfectly symmetrically arranged and coated in fresh snow, frame the view into the winter park. Between them, a gap opens into the snowy woodland — a crooked tree breaks the strict symmetry of the composition. The deep depth of field from the bench backs to the bare trees in the background reinforces the graphic character of the image.
Winter Harbour
View of the Sophienhafen on the Saale in its winter dress: work boats lie moored at the quay, a white harbour building and a multi-storey house rise on the right. On the left, a bridge crosses the calm water, snow-covered riverside trees are reflected in the Saale, and a solitary swan glides silently through the frame. The overcast sky lends the scene a melancholic winter mood.
Alone on the Bridge
A young woman walks alone across a snow-covered footbridge on the Peißnitz island. The metal railing draws the eye into the depth where snow-laden branches form a natural tunnel overhead. Her silhouette merges with the wintry backdrop — the central perspective and untouched snow create a quiet, almost cinematic atmosphere.
Winter Stillness on the Saale
A view through snow-covered branches and riverside bushes onto the still Saale near the Peißnitz. The dark water lies nearly motionless, reflecting the overcast winter sky and bare tree silhouettes. Fallen branches jut into the water, and the dense riverside vegetation forms a natural frame — a scene of absolute winter tranquillity on the Wilde Saale.
The Way Across the Bridge
An empty, snow-covered footbridge on the Peißnitz island leading into a tunnel of winter-clad trees. The symmetrically converging metal railings create a strong vanishing-point perspective that irresistibly draws the eye into the depth. Fresh snow on the bridge deck shows only scattered footprints — a quiet winter morning on the island between the Saale's channels.
Into the Light
A narrow, snow-covered path leads through dense winter woodland on the Peißnitz island. Dark tree trunks and snow-laden undergrowth form an almost impenetrable tunnel — at the end of the path, a bright spot of light beckons as the only way out of the darkness of the riparian forest. The dense vegetation lets only little light through even in the leafless winter.
Riverbank Trees on the Saale
Several trees lean at dramatic angles over the snow-covered banks of the Saale on the Peißnitz. Their trunks — shaped by the floods of past years — reach far out over the dark water, in which the winter landscape is reflected. Fresh snow on branches and ground accentuates the contrast between bright white and the near-black river water.
Silent Traces
A barely visible path winds through the snow-covered undergrowth of the riparian forest on the Peißnitz island. Thin tree trunks and dense branches, draped in fresh snow, create an almost abstract pattern of vertical lines and white surfaces. The path nearly disappears into the vegetation — only a careful eye spots the narrow passage.
Winter Magic on the Wilde Saale
The Wilde Saale — the unspoiled side channel of the river on the Peißnitz — in its winter dress: snow-covered trees arch over the dark, still water creating perfect reflections. A mighty branch spans bow-like across the entire width of the frame, while driftwood and patches of snow float on the water's surface. A scene reminiscent of an enchanted fairy-tale forest.
Bridge over the Wilde Saale
A view through a web of snow-covered trees and branches onto a footbridge crossing the Wilde Saale channel on the Peißnitz island. The dark water flows quietly beneath the metal structure, while snow on the banks and treetops creates a fairy-tale contrast. The natural framing through the vegetation lends the image depth and intimacy.
Monument in Winter Sleep
A stone obelisk on the Peißnitz island, encircled by mighty, bare deciduous trees and an untouched blanket of snow. The wide, open composition makes the monument appear small and lost amid the winter parkland. The deep focus from the tree trunks in the foreground to the overcast sky amplifies the sense of vastness and winter silence.
Winter Avenue
A snow-covered avenue on the Peißnitz island with street lamps and a wooden railing on the right edge. The cleared path winds between snow-laden trees, and in the distance a solitary walker's silhouette can be made out. The lamps and the gently curving path lend the scene a romantic winter atmosphere — a classic walking route on Halle's beloved park island.
Through Winter Trees
The massive fieldstone wall of the Moritzkirche, seen through bare winter trees in a vertical composition. The Gothic choir with its pointed roof and tall church windows rises behind the mighty wall, while in the foreground a snow-covered pavement and a street sign emphasise the urban setting of the medieval structure.
Moritzburg in the Snow
The Moritzburg in Halle (Saale) seen from the street side: the late-Gothic fortress — today the Art Museum of Saxony-Anhalt — with its massive walls and distinctive round tower in winter dress. Fresh snow covers the battlements and surrounding trees, while a snowy street in the foreground completes the winter frame.
Universitätsring in Winter
The snow-covered pavement along Universitätsring near Friedemann-Bach-Platz: a cleared path runs between snow-covered pavements, with a row of bare street trees and bollards on the left, and a wall bearing traces of graffiti on the right. In the distance, a pedestrian walks through the winter scenery — a typical image of urban winter life in Halle.
Urban Signs
Urban art in the Bergviertel district of Halle: large-scale HFC bubble letters in pink and white adorn a weathered sandstone wall — a fan culture memorial to Hallescher FC. Right beside it, a grey electrical box on which someone has scrawled a screaming face. Cobblestones, worn stone steps, and the shadow of a wrought-iron railing speak to the character of Halle's old town.
Footprints on the Ice
The frozen Saale canal at the level of the university tennis courts in Halle: footprints are etched into the ice surface — someone crossed the canal when it was not yet fully frozen, and the imprints have been preserved in the surface. Dried grasses along the shore break through the ice sheet. The deep depth of field at ƒ/7.1 accentuates the textures and cracks of the fragile winter landscape.
The Cellist
A cellist sits on a folding chair in the middle of the Große Ulrichstraße pedestrian zone, playing his instrument with deep concentration. Beside him, the open cello case awaits donations. A woman with a shopping bag pauses to listen — behind her, the shop windows of the fashion store "24COLOURS" and the tram tracks threading through the bustling shopping street of Halle's old town. ISO 1600 betrays the pale winter light of an overcast January day.
Self-Portrait in a Shop Window
Multiple layered reflections in a shop window in Halle's old town: photographer Arnold Wender with camera appears as a reflection alongside the lettering "APOTHEK…", "Juwelier", and "Schmiede". Street signs and Gründerzeit facades are reflected in reverse in the glass, overlaying the displays behind the pane and merging into a multi-layered image — a self-portrait between reality and reflection, quintessential street photography.
In Love with Halle
Panoramic view across the market square of Halle featuring the iconic heart sculpture "Verliebt in Halle" in the foreground. In the background, all five towers rise — the four of the Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen and the freestanding Roter Turm — beneath a dramatically overcast winter sky. A tram crosses the square, the Händel monument stands in silhouette, and pedestrians populate the wintry scene. A wide-angle city portrait uniting Halle's landmarks in a single frame.
In Front of the Roter Turm
Looking up Große Ulrichstraße towards the Roter Turm on a cold winter day — pedestrians move through the bustling shopping street, to the right the shop windows of a pharmacy and jeweller, above the overhead wires of the tram network. A young woman in a headscarf walked into the frame at the last moment — an unplanned photobomb that remained blurry but lent the overall image a surprising sense of motion. Street photography thrives on moments like these.
Nightlife Reflections
A view through the window pane of a bar in Halle's old town: behind the glass, illuminated bottle shelves line the wall while a bartender stands behind the counter. Simultaneously, the Gründerzeit facade of the building across the street is reflected in the pane — a double-exposure effect that fuses interior and exterior worlds into a single image. The warm glow of the bar contrasts with the cool night outside.
Große Ulrichstraße in Fisheye
Große Ulrichstraße at night, captured with the extreme 7Artisans 6mm fisheye lens: the dramatic barrel distortion bends Gründerzeit facades, tram tracks, and cobblestones into a sphere. On the left, the "Kulturinsel" theatre with its distinctive "nt." crown logo; on the right, an ornate Gründerzeit corner building — the entire width of the bustling shopping street captured in a single, spherical image. ISO 3200 reveals the nocturnal setting.
Night Reflection
The blue hour on the Saale at the Peißnitzinsel, just before the Piratenschiff playground: bare winter trees and the silhouettes of apartment high-rises stand against the deep blue twilight sky, while a narrow orange strip on the horizon betrays the final minutes of sunset. The mirror-smooth water surface doubles the entire scene — trees, buildings, and sky appear in perfect symmetry. A thin layer of ice shimmers on the right bank. Captured at 1/60s and ISO 320 in the last minutes of daylight.
Twilight over the City
A view through bare winter trees towards the Sophienhafen on the Saale during the blue hour: the distinctive silhouettes of harbour buildings and an apartment high-rise stand against the gradient from orange through violet to deep blue in the evening sky. In the foreground, a path runs along the riverbank; to the left, a bright building complex at the harbour basin. The expanse of sky and the delicate branch silhouettes create a melancholic evening mood on the river.
Winter Sunset on the Saale
The Wilde Saale at sunset in January: between dense riverside trees, the partially frozen river winds its way — the ice surface shimmers in the warm colours of the evening sky, while open water reflects the silhouettes of bare trees. On the horizon, the outline of an apartment high-rise; above, the dramatic colour gradient from gold through violet to deep blue. ISO 3200 at 1/500s betrays the rapidly fading light of the winter twilight.
On the Tram
An everyday moment on a Halle tram: an elderly couple sits side by side — both wearing eye patches, his over the left eye, hers over the right. One of them is reflected in the window. The MDV sign in the background reveals the location near the Leipziger Turm. The mirrored eye patches create a striking image, wordlessly telling a story of togetherness — a quiet moment of connection in public transport.
Clock Tower of the Main Post Office
The imposing clock tower of the Main Post Office on Hallorenring, built in 1896 in the Neo-Renaissance style: the golden clock with ornate hands adorns the sandstone facade, crowned by a pointed slate roof with a weather vane. Round-arched windows, cornices, and decorative stonework articulate the massive tower. Two birds circle above the spire against a brilliant blue sky with fair-weather clouds. Captured with the Canon EF 70-200mm at 70mm — the brief exposure of 1/1600s freezes every stone detail in razor-sharp clarity.
On the Road Together
Two cyclists on the Peißnitz island, captured with the Canon 100-400mm telephoto at 278mm: in front, a man on a conventional bicycle; behind, a second rider on a recumbent tricycle with an orange pannier bag and yellow safety flag. Both wear helmets and pass a dense, lush green hedge serving as a natural backdrop. The side angle and telephoto compression flatten the depth and place the two vehicles in a delightful contrast — upright versus recumbent, conventional versus alternative.
Garden Spider with Prey
A European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) hangs upside down in its web on the Peißnitz island, clutching a freshly caught wasp in its legs. Sunlight makes the delicate web threads glisten and sculpts the distinctive cross marking on the spider's abdomen. The creamy-soft bokeh background of green and blue — produced by the Canon EF 24-70mm at 70mm and ƒ/6.3 — isolates the macro subject from the foliage of the riparian forest. A September moment in the Peißnitz ecosystem.
Laternenfest Reflection
The Laternenfest on the Peißnitz island, Halle's largest folk festival: white pagoda tents and a colourful carousel tent in orange and yellow line up before towering deciduous trees. A large rain puddle in the foreground mirrors the entire scene perfectly — tents, trees, and the imposing cumulus clouds of a late-summer August sky are doubled symmetrically. The deep depth of field at ƒ/7.1 captures both the reflection and the depth of the festival grounds.
Guardian of the Gründerzeit
A black crow perches on the rooftop cornice of the Leopoldina — the German National Academy of Sciences in Halle — beside an opulent stucco palmette acroterion crowning the corner of the historic building. Captured with the Canon 100-400mm at full 400mm and ƒ/11, the telephoto isolates the bird and the architectural detail against the warm evening sky. A contrast between nature and 19th-century craftsmanship, captured in the golden light of dusk.
Above the Rooftops of Halle
The distinctive red hot air balloon of the Saalesparkasse with its white Sparkassen-S floats above Halle — captured from the Burgbrücke heading towards the Moritzburg with the Sigma 150-600mm at an extreme 546mm focal length. Passengers can be seen in the gondola gazing over the Saale city. At the bottom of the frame, out-of-focus treetops in warm late-summer light frame the scene. The aperture of ƒ/16 at ISO 250 ensures full sharpness of the balloon against the cloudless August sky.
Excursion Boat Marie Hedwig
The excursion boat "Marie Hedwig" at its permanent mooring on the Saale — a green-and-white vessel with an open sun deck that serves as a floating restaurant with a small menu during summer. Dense, lush riverside greenery frames the boat on both sides, a walkway leads from the right bank to the landing. Captured with the Sigma 150-600mm at full 600mm — the extreme telephoto compresses boat and background vegetation into a dense, picturesque image.
Pauluskirche Giebichenstein
The Pauluskirche in Halle-Giebichenstein, a Neo-Gothic brick church dating from 1903: the tall spire and two flanking side towers rise against a dramatic summer sky with sweeping clouds. The warm red of the clinker brick, the large rosette window above the pointed-arch portal, and the golden cross atop the spire form an impressive ensemble. Summer greenery frames the church. The wide-angle perspective at 24mm emphasises the soaring verticality of the sacred building.
View Towards the Marktkirche
A vertical look into the sky above Halle's market square: overhead tram wires cross at the centre of the image and divide the deep blue summer sky into segments. To the left, the patinated copper spire of a Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen tower with golden orbs enters the frame; to the right, a lavishly ornamented Gründerzeit building. The worm's-eye perspective at 24mm wide angle transforms the familiar cityscape into an abstract geometric composition.
Pareidolia at Riebeckplatz
Early morning at Riebeckplatz: between the concrete bridges, a Mickey Mouse silhouette appears in the clouds — a classic example of pareidolia, the brain's tendency to perceive faces and figures in random patterns.
Cat at the Brick Gate
A ginger tabby cat sits alertly in front of a historic brick gate with a fieldstone wall and wrought-iron grille on a quiet side street in Halle. The gate pillar carries a small saddle roof of beaver-tail tiles, while behind it Virginia creeper sprawls over the wall. Cobblestones, a green courtyard, and the plastered facade of a neighbouring house speak to the charm of Halle's residential quarters. At ƒ/2.8 and 57mm, the focus is razor-sharp on the cat while the background melts into a soft blur.
Bead Street Art at the Burgbrücke
Handmade bead figures — a red-haired mermaid à la Ariel and a green frog — hang alongside love locks on the wrought-iron railing of the 1898 Burgbrücke near Moritzburg castle in Halle (Saale). Just one day after this photo was posted on Instagram, the delicate bead figures had already vanished — ephemeral art in public space. Only the love locks remained, which have by now become a permanent fixture of the cityscape at the Burgbrücke.
Onion Dome
The distinctive onion dome of a Gründerzeit building in Halle with a slate-covered roof and delicate weather vane. The brick facade displays typical Gründerzeit elements: round-arched windows with sandstone surrounds, a carved crest above the corner window, green shutters, and a richly decorated eaves cornice with wrought-iron balcony railing. A fir tree enters the foreground. Captured at 70mm and ƒ/5.6 against an overcast summer sky — an architectural detail documenting the building culture of the turn of the century.
Golden Hour on the Saale
The paved riverside path along the Saale near the Peißnitz in the warm light of golden hour: old linden and chestnut trees line the broad path, their leaf canopy casting dappled sunlight on the pavement. To the right, a metal riverbank railing; beyond, the Saale. A walker moves ahead into the backlight. Ivy tendrils sprawl over the embankment wall on the left. The deep depth of field at ƒ/7.1 and 24mm wide angle captures the summery vanishing-point perspective of the tree-lined path in full depth.
Resting Place on the Saale
A weathered wooden bench stands in warm evening light on the Saale riverbank near the Peißnitz — behind it, the view opens onto the river with its metal railing and the opposite bank promenade. Old lindens cast long shadows across the paved path; to the left, a prominent climbing wall emerges from the greenery. Cumulus clouds build on the summer horizon. A place of rest on the river, captured at 24mm wide angle and ƒ/7.1 — the bench invites one to linger, gazing at the Saale flowing by.
Summer Green on the Peißnitz
Ground-level perspective on the Peißnitz island: the dark trunk of an old tree stands in sharp focus between a manicured lawn and a sandy path. In the background, the summer park dissolves into a creamy bokeh of green tones — only vague outlines of further trees, a meadow, and a colourful playground structure can be discerned. At 42mm and ƒ/11 with ISO 2500, the close shooting distance produces a shallow depth of field despite the small aperture — an impressionistic summer image of the Peißnitz.
Silhouettes on the Saale Riverbank
A young woman and a man sit on the Saale riverbank on the Peißnitz island, chatting — captured as silhouettes in the warm backlight of a summer afternoon. Sunlight glitters on the water surface of the Saale behind them, while overhanging branches and leaves form a natural frame. Shot with the Canon 70-200mm at 190mm, which compresses the intimate scene from a distance. A quiet summer moment on the river that captures the quality of life along the Saale.
Gründerzeit Clock Tower
The elegant corner tower of a Gründerzeit commercial building in Halle's old town: a white clock with Roman numerals sits above a richly ornamented round-arched window, crowned by a zinc dome with an octagonal lantern and weather vane. The sandstone-coloured facade features pilasters, cornices, and acanthus-leaf ornaments — quintessential Gründerzeit craftsmanship. Captured with the Canon 5DS R at 70mm and ƒ/3.2, isolating the tower against the deep blue summer sky with a single cumulus cloud.
Fire Brigade on the Peißnitz
A fire engine with blue lights flashing drives through the shady linden avenue on the Peißnitz island — dust swirls behind the vehicle and is illuminated by the filtering summer light. A cyclist in an orange T-shirt rides ahead of the fire engine; to the left, a bicycle rack stands by. The mighty trunks of old linden trees line the path like columns of a green cathedral. At 70mm and ISO 3200, the Canon 5DS R captures the moment between everyday idyll and emergency operations in Halle's most popular park.
Leipziger Turm
The Leipziger Turm — the last surviving medieval city gate of Halle (Saale), built in the 15th century: the round fieldstone tower rises with its two black clock faces, slate roof, and gilded weather vane into the brilliant blue summer sky. Narrow loopholes and a Romanesque arched window attest to its fortified past. Captured at 70mm and ƒ/2.8 with the Canon 5DS R from a worm's-eye perspective — the wide aperture creates a soft sky bokeh that makes the tower stand out three-dimensionally.
The West Tower of the Moritzburg
The mighty west tower of the Moritzburg, built from 1484 as a late-Gothic residence for the Archbishops of Magdeburg: the round defensive tower with massive rubble-stone walls and a conical roof of red beaver-tail tiles rises against a sky streaked with delicate cirrus clouds. Gothic cross-mullion windows pierce the walls, and a verdigris finial crowns the roof peak. To the left, autumn-tinted foliage frames the tower. The deep depth of field at ƒ/7.1 documents every stone of the medieval castle complex, which today serves as an art museum.
Hello Halle
The panorama of Halle's market square on a perfect summer day: in the foreground, the striking red heart reading "VERLIEBT IN HALLE" with the golden crescent of the Hallesche Stiftung logo. Behind it, the bronze Händel monument; to the left, the four towers of the Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen; and to the right, the Gothic Roter Turm — all five landmarks united beneath a brilliant blue sky. A red HAVAG tram crosses the square. Captured with the Canon 5DS R at 24mm wide angle and ƒ/14 — a welcome image for Halle.Online.
