Nature Photography
Nature photography in Halle (Saale) reveals the surprising diversity of flora and fauna in the heart of the city. The Peißnitz island, the Saale floodplains and the Dölau Heath are home to rich wildlife. Kingfishers on the Saale bank, storks in the meadows, wildflowers in the floodplains – nature asserts itself even in urban space. My nature photos document these green oases and their inhabitants and invite you to rediscover the natural beauty right on your doorstep.

Winter Stillness on the Saale
A view through snow-covered branches and riverside bushes onto the still Saale near the Peißnitz. The dark water lies nearly motionless, reflecting the overcast winter sky and bare tree silhouettes. Fallen branches jut into the water, and the dense riverside vegetation forms a natural frame — a scene of absolute winter tranquillity on the Wilde Saale.
Into the Light
A narrow, snow-covered path leads through dense winter woodland on the Peißnitz island. Dark tree trunks and snow-laden undergrowth form an almost impenetrable tunnel — at the end of the path, a bright spot of light beckons as the only way out of the darkness of the riparian forest. The dense vegetation lets only little light through even in the leafless winter.
Riverbank Trees on the Saale
Several trees lean at dramatic angles over the snow-covered banks of the Saale on the Peißnitz. Their trunks — shaped by the floods of past years — reach far out over the dark water, in which the winter landscape is reflected. Fresh snow on branches and ground accentuates the contrast between bright white and the near-black river water.
Silent Traces
A barely visible path winds through the snow-covered undergrowth of the riparian forest on the Peißnitz island. Thin tree trunks and dense branches, draped in fresh snow, create an almost abstract pattern of vertical lines and white surfaces. The path nearly disappears into the vegetation — only a careful eye spots the narrow passage.
Winter Magic on the Wilde Saale
The Wilde Saale — the unspoiled side channel of the river on the Peißnitz — in its winter dress: snow-covered trees arch over the dark, still water creating perfect reflections. A mighty branch spans bow-like across the entire width of the frame, while driftwood and patches of snow float on the water's surface. A scene reminiscent of an enchanted fairy-tale forest.
Footprints on the Ice
The frozen Saale canal at the level of the university tennis courts in Halle: footprints are etched into the ice surface — someone crossed the canal when it was not yet fully frozen, and the imprints have been preserved in the surface. Dried grasses along the shore break through the ice sheet. The deep depth of field at ƒ/7.1 accentuates the textures and cracks of the fragile winter landscape.
Winter Sunset on the Saale
The Wilde Saale at sunset in January: between dense riverside trees, the partially frozen river winds its way — the ice surface shimmers in the warm colours of the evening sky, while open water reflects the silhouettes of bare trees. On the horizon, the outline of an apartment high-rise; above, the dramatic colour gradient from gold through violet to deep blue. ISO 3200 at 1/500s betrays the rapidly fading light of the winter twilight.
Garden Spider with Prey
A European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) hangs upside down in its web on the Peißnitz island, clutching a freshly caught wasp in its legs. Sunlight makes the delicate web threads glisten and sculpts the distinctive cross marking on the spider's abdomen. The creamy-soft bokeh background of green and blue — produced by the Canon EF 24-70mm at 70mm and ƒ/6.3 — isolates the macro subject from the foliage of the riparian forest. A September moment in the Peißnitz ecosystem.
Guardian of the Gründerzeit
A black crow perches on the rooftop cornice of the Leopoldina — the German National Academy of Sciences in Halle — beside an opulent stucco palmette acroterion crowning the corner of the historic building. Captured with the Canon 100-400mm at full 400mm and ƒ/11, the telephoto isolates the bird and the architectural detail against the warm evening sky. A contrast between nature and 19th-century craftsmanship, captured in the golden light of dusk.
Excursion Boat Marie Hedwig
The excursion boat "Marie Hedwig" at its permanent mooring on the Saale — a green-and-white vessel with an open sun deck that serves as a floating restaurant with a small menu during summer. Dense, lush riverside greenery frames the boat on both sides, a walkway leads from the right bank to the landing. Captured with the Sigma 150-600mm at full 600mm — the extreme telephoto compresses boat and background vegetation into a dense, picturesque image.
Summer Green on the Peißnitz
Ground-level perspective on the Peißnitz island: the dark trunk of an old tree stands in sharp focus between a manicured lawn and a sandy path. In the background, the summer park dissolves into a creamy bokeh of green tones — only vague outlines of further trees, a meadow, and a colourful playground structure can be discerned. At 42mm and ƒ/11 with ISO 2500, the close shooting distance produces a shallow depth of field despite the small aperture — an impressionistic summer image of the Peißnitz.
Fire Brigade on the Peißnitz
A fire engine with blue lights flashing drives through the shady linden avenue on the Peißnitz island — dust swirls behind the vehicle and is illuminated by the filtering summer light. A cyclist in an orange T-shirt rides ahead of the fire engine; to the left, a bicycle rack stands by. The mighty trunks of old linden trees line the path like columns of a green cathedral. At 70mm and ISO 3200, the Canon 5DS R captures the moment between everyday idyll and emergency operations in Halle's most popular park.
